Project Story
This stop-motion animation project was designed as a hands-on experiment in frame-by-frame storytelling, utilizing action figures, green screen techniques, and professional animation software. What began as a Claymation concept evolved into a more efficient and equally creative production using articulated figures, allowing me to focus on camera work, timing, and visual storytelling.
To ensure my setup was viable, I began with a full test animation, capturing 270 frames at 12 frames per second (fps) using a Canon EOS Rebel T5, a green screen, and Neewer LED lighting. This test helped troubleshoot challenges with lighting consistency, figure stability, and software integration. After cycling through several platforms, I ultimately selected Dragonframe 5 for its precision and stability in stop motion capture.
Once the test animation validated the setup, I moved into full production. The scene was storyboarded, and character movements were carefully blocked out frame by frame. I applied a clean lighting setup and began capturing the final footage directly through Dragonframe. In post-production, I brought the footage into Adobe Premiere Pro to add background music, sound effects, and experiment with chroma keying to remove the green screen.
This project was equal parts challenging and inspiring. It gave me a deep appreciation for the stop motion process and sharpened my skills in both technical setup and animation pacing. I plan to continue developing more advanced stop motion projects with refined workflows and expanded visual effects.

The test shot on green screen captured a short sequence of action figure movement to verify camera placement, lighting balance, and chroma key effectiveness before committing to full production.
The green-screen video, devoid of background scenes or music, provided a clean view of the raw animation, allowing me to focus on refining timing, movement smoothness, and figure stability before layering in the final visual and audio elements.
